We are seeking an innovative Mechanical Engineer to support the mechanical design and prototyping of a new robot. This role is an exciting opportunity to be an early decision-maker in all of the mechanical subsystems and overall design of our robot. The opportunity will be equal parts high-level and creative while still very technical and in the details of mechanical design. You will receive the support of mechanical/electrical hardware engineers collaborating side-by-side in system architecture, design, and prototyping.

We're hiring virtually, in addition to our San Francisco Bay Area, California office onsite.

Builder Opportunity:

    • Drive the early mechanical CAD work as we design the physical systems and subsystems in SOLIDWORKS
    • Collaborate with our hardware, software, simulation, and controls/perception teams to ensure our robot meets all customer and engineering requirements
    • Create 3D printed prototypes and assemble and test parts of early robot designs

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field, or equivalent experience
    • Advanced Mechanical CAD experience (NX, SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, Creo, etc.), including finite element analysis, simulations, 2D drawings, and design for fabrication.
    • 2+ years of mechanical design experience with background in robotics or related size and complexity
    • Experience with industrial 3D printers, mills, lathes, and laser cutters to implement this prototyping
    • Highly motivated teammate with excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Enjoy working in a fast paced, collaborative and dynamic start-up environment as part of a small team
    • Willingness to occasionally travel

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with multiple forms of robotic mobility
    • Experience designing dynamic or actuated components for robots or industrial machines
    • Proven ability to simulate dynamic/kinematic models alongside FEA analysis of a structure
    • Experience partnering with prototyping technicians and partners
    • Proficiency designing motion control systems with sensor, actuators and complex mechanisms
    • Experience designing systems that are used in industrial settings
    • Working knowledge of failure avoidance methods including DFMEA/PFMEA and fault tree analysis
    • Familiarity with reliability and quality processes
